My name is Adam Bowller and I love running! When I began running in 2009, I could never have imagined what I’d go on to achieve. I took up running to help lose a bit of weight, I ran my first 10k later that year and then I was hooked! I went on to break my club’s marathon record in 2:32:57 and represent the England Masters half marathon team. My other PB’s include 16:16 for 5K, 33:33 for 10k and a 72:36 half marathon.
I’ve been fortunate to train under a number of different coaches and alongside some fabulous athletes, including a 3-time Olympian! The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that all athletes are different and that training needs to be athlete-led to suit their individual needs. The ‘tube training’ approach that lends itself to the club structure may not get the best out of you as an athlete or help you to peak for your goal race.
When I first ran at a club I don’t think anyone there thought I had the potential to be a future England representative or run the times I have achieved. I completed my first marathon in 3:36:55, so I’ve taken more than an hour off my time. I did this by learning about the physiology and purpose behind each run and how to structure a plan to enable me to peak at the right time.
I believe that the knowledge and experience I’ve gained can be used to help other runners to get the best out of themselves.
